The first bill filed in the Tennessee State Senate would allow the state to write its own code of ethics for counselors. ACA CEO Richard Yep and Art Terrazas, director of government affairs, spoke to the Nashville Scene about the very real consequences of discriminatory legislation.
Filed by Sen. Jack Johnson, SB1 updates last year's HB1840/SB1556, which allows counselors to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community and others. It's the reason ACA relocated its 2017 Conference & Expo, originally scheduled for Nashville, to San Francisco.
"The ACA code of ethics has been built over 50 years," says the ACA's [Richard] Yep, citing the careful standards the organization takes in every revision. "These are designed to safeguard consumers. They are based on research and education, not the whims of politicians."
