Thelma Duffey will serve as the American Counseling Association’s 64th president after being elected by a vote of the association’s membership.
Duffey is the founding president of the Association for Creativity in Counseling, a division of ACA, and has served two terms as a representative to the ACA Governing Council. She is a professor and department chair at the University of Texas at San Antonio and has also owned a multidisciplinary group private practice offering counseling to individuals, couples and families for the past 23 years. In addition to being a licensed professional counselor, she is a licensed marriage and family therapist.
Duffey is an ACA fellow and a past recipient of the association’s Professional Development Award. She established The Journal for Creativity in Mental Health, an international peer-reviewed journal, and was also instrumental in development of the ACA-ACC Creative Interventions and Activities Clearinghouse. She is the editor of the book Creative Interventions in Grief and Loss Therapy: When the Music Stops, a Dream Dies and co-editor (with Matt Englar-Carlson and Marcheta Evans) of the newly released A Counselor’s Guide to Working With Men.
Duffey will succeed current ACA President-Elect Robert L. Smith as the association’s 64th president on July 1, 2015. Smith will take office this July, succeeding current President Cirecie West-Olatunji.
