HB 1661 would prohibit all licensed mental health providers, including licensed professional counselors, from providing so-called "conversion therapy" to anyone under eighteen years of age.
The American Counseling Association (ACA) has long decried the practice of this bogus “therapy," as it is not congruent with the ACA
Code of Ethics— the ethical code for the profession of counseling.
The effects of efforts to change sexual orientation have been found to cause damage to individuals. A basic principle across all health professions, including mental health, is to do no harm and the practice of “conversion therapy” can be extremely harmful.
