Pittsburgh could become the first municipality in PA to ban conversion therapy for minors who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender.
Conversion Therapy (also called Reparative Therapy) attempts to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of a person undergoing treatment.
It’s been banned in California, Illinois, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and the District of Columbia, as well as the cities of Seattle, Miami, and Cincinnati. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, minors who were forced to undergo conversion therapy were more than eight times more likely to have attempted suicide and six times more likely to report high levels of depression.
