The featured articles cover issues relating to natural disasters, infectious diseases (specifically, HIV), economic disadvantage, and health disparities. These articles are freely available online through August 2020.
The Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development (JMCD) has published “Trauma-Informed Counseling: A JMCD Virtual Issue” featuring a collection of previously published articles relating to health pandemics, disasters, and trauma that may advance multicultural and social justice counseling efforts during the COVID-19 era.
To date, the spread of COVID-19 has resulted in over 2.6 million confirmed cases worldwide and 125,000 deaths in the United States. The pandemic has massively impacted the economic, physical and mental well-being of Americans. The challenges caused by COVID-19 has also disproportionately affected pre-existing inequalities among culturally and socially marginalized populations.
The featured articles cover issues relating to natural disasters, infectious diseases, economic disadvantage, and health disparities. The perspectives offered in these articles can help assist mental health practitioners and scholars better contextualize the impact of environmental influences on members of BIPOC communities. Moreover, these articles formulate culturally responsive strategies that promote resilience and recovery during the COVID-19 pandemic.
