On July 1, Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA-39th) introduced the "Put School Counselors Where They're Needed Act," H.R. 5671, in the U.S. House of Representatives. Nationally, only 70% of students graduate from high school with a regular diploma. Every school day 7,000 students become high school dropouts. H.R. 5671 highlights the need for more professional school counselors to help solve the nation's dropout crisis, especially in low-income schools. The bill specifies that professional school counselors can help students at risk of dropping out of school grow personally, build positive social skills, set career goals, and realize their full academic potential, all toward becoming contributing members of society.
